2022 Meetings & Events

FPA-NENY programs enhance your awareness
of issues affecting many people.

2023-2024 FPA-NENY Calendar of Events

Whether you do comprehensive financial planning or specialize in just one facet of it, there are so many topic areas that a CFP® needs to have knowledge about.

The broader the scope of your knowledge, the more value you bring to the client relationship. Just think of all of the topics covered in the CFP® study program!

Because financial planning is about the client’s entire financial life, it is so important to be aware of how little details fit into the big picture. The key is recognizing the issues and being able to provide solutions, whether you do so yourself or turn them to someone who handles that area.

You have found your place for solutions at the FPA-NENY!

10 CRITICAL IRA ERRORS ADVISORS MUST AVOID

For more than 40 years, IRAs have been available as a retirement-savings vehicle, but the rules surrounding them are constantly changing, and they are incredibly – and deceptively – complex. Each year, client mistakes, advisor errors and oversights by financial institutions cost clients millions of dollars in unnecessary taxation. This session seeks to reverse that trend by helping advisors to identify and avoid 10 of the most frequent and costly IRA mistakes.

Current Trends in Long Term Care and Special Needs Planning

Speaker: Tara Anne Pleat, Esq., Founding Partner, Wilcenski & Pleat, PLLC

The SECURE Act and SECURE 2.0 made major changes to how estate planners address retirement accounts during the estate planning process. Recent proposed regulations attempted to clarify (sometimes successfully and sometimes not) certain issues, including how to obtain the stretch for beneficiaries who are disabled or chronically ill and how a trust can qualify for life expectancy payouts. We will discuss the interplay between special needs planning and retirement accounts, as well as other developments in the field including supported decision making, in New York and nationally, as well as the effects changes in the delivery of services to seniors and individuals who are disabled are having on the advice being given to clients.

Session 2: What's Ahead for the Markets and Economy

Presented by Jeremy Siegel, Wisdom Tree‘s Senior Investment Strategy Advisor and Emeritus Professor of Finance at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. – presented virtually

Professor Siegel shares his thoughts on the markets and economy. Putting today’s market and economic environment into an historical context is one of his unique capabilities and with stocks near all-time highs and structural forces holding down bond yields for the foreseeable future, the forward expectations for both growth and income from the traditional 60/40 model has to be revised downward. Furthermore, as people are living longer, the risk of a client’s portfolio falling short of their retirement needs has grown.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding the major current issues facing global markets and the economy.
  2. How today’s market and economic environment fits into a longer-view historic context.
  3. Reviewing historic and current equity and bond market trends and observation on global equity valuations.
  4. Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on stock and bond returns and the future for inflation.

Session 3: Changing of the Guard - A comprehensive approach to succession planning

Presented by Tom Rocco of Invesco

More than one-third of financial professionals will retire within the next ten years, accounting for nearly 40% of the industry’s assets. Over one quarter of those who said they planned to retire also said they did not have a succession plan.

Succession plans need a clear, concise, and consistent communications strategy to be successful. When potentially disrupting long-term client relationships, it matters what you say, when you say it, and how you say it.
